What Makes One Financial Advisor Different From Another?

There’s no shortage of financial advisors today. A quick online search will show hundreds of firms all saying some version of the same thing. We help you invest, plan for retirement, and prepare for the future.

But if you’re trusting someone with your family’s wealth, your financial decisions, and your future, the real question is what actually makes one advisory relationship different from another.

Hi, I’m Rory O’Hara, founder of Ausperity Private Wealth. And the name Ausperity was chosen very intentionally. It brings together the concept of auspice, which means to provide guidance, support, and protection, with prosperity, which speaks to wealth, success, and well-being. That combination captures how we view our role.

Our goal is not just to manage investments; it is to guide families through important financial decisions and help them use their wealth to support a more meaningful life.

In this video, I want to share what we believe sets Ausperity apart and how we think about wealth management, and why many families choose to partner with us.

Experience Meets a Modern Wealth Management Perspective

First, we combine experience with a modern perspective.

One of the things that makes Ausperity unique is the blend of experience and next-generation thinking on our team. We have advisors with decades of experience helping families through retirement, investment decisions, tax planning conversations, estate planning coordination, business transitions, and major life events.

And at the same time, we have a younger generation of advisors who understand the challenges facing high-income professionals, executives, business owners, and younger families building wealth today.

That combination matters because our clients are not all in the same stages of life. Some are preparing for retirement. Some are navigating stock compensation plans. Some are building businesses. And some are managing concentrated wealth.

Some of these families are trying to create more flexibility and freedom for their own families as well.

And our job is to meet clients where they are and help them make better, more confident decisions.

Clear, Disciplined Investment Management

Second, we believe investing should be clear, disciplined, and easy to understand.

Many investors do not just want someone managing their money. They want to understand what is happening, what decisions are being made, and how their portfolio fits into their broader plan.

That is why we try to keep our investment philosophy clear and disciplined. In many cases, portfolios are built around low-cost, broadly diversified investments.

And when appropriate, we may also use direct indexing, tax-loss harvesting, and other strategies to customize portfolios around a client’s goals, tax situation, or concentrated holdings.

We’re not trying to chase headlines or predict every short-term market move. We’re trying to build portfolios that are aligned with the client’s plan, risk tolerance, tax picture, and their long-term goals.

Portfolio Rebalancing: The Bowling Ball and Bumpers Analogy

One analogy we often use with clients is the bowling ball and bumpers. Your portfolio has a target allocation. That’s the bowling ball. And over time, as stocks and bonds perform differently, the ball can drift from one side to the other.

Our job is simply to act like the bumpers. We help rebalance the portfolio and keep it aligned with the plan, rather than letting market movement quietly change the amount of risk that you might be taking.

That sounds simple, but done consistently, it can be very powerful.

Financial Planning Beyond the Portfolio

Third, we plan beyond the portfolio.

A lot of financial advisors start and stop with investments. At Ausperity, we believe the portfolio is only part of the conversation.

For many of our clients, the biggest financial opportunities may involve things like equity compensation, tax planning, real estate, business ownership, retirement income, charitable giving, estate planning, insurance, or deciding how and when they can create more freedom in their life.

For qualified investors, we may also evaluate alternative investments, such as private credit, private equity, and real estate, only if they fit into the client’s broader plan.

But the key is this, we do not start with products. We start with the client’s life, goals, balance sheet, tax situation, and planning opportunities. Then we build around that.

Financial Planning Built Around Implementation

Fourth, we are built around implementation.

One of the biggest problems in financial planning is that too many plans just sit on the shelf. A client has a meeting, reviews a long-term report, feels good for a few days, and then life gets busy. Nothing actually gets done.

We try to solve that.

Our clients typically have a relationship with more than one advisor at the firm, so they’re supported by a team, rather than dependent on just one person.

After meetings, we focus on clear action items, follow-up, and helping move important decisions forward.

And that may mean coordinating with the CPA, estate attorney, insurance professional, mortgage lender, or another advisor that the client might have in their life.

Because great advice only matters if it gets implemented.

A Personal Wealth Management Relationship

And fifth, we want the relationship to feel personal.

We take the technical side of wealth management very seriously. But we also believe this business is deeply personal.

Money touches almost every important part of life. Family, career, retirement, giving, health, freedom, legacy, and peace of mind.

So we want to know our clients as people, not just as account numbers.

We celebrate milestones. We care about family goals. We talk about what money is actually meant to support. And we try to build long-term relationships where clients feel known, heard, and cared for.

And it’s that personal relationship which is a major part of who we are.

Building a Life Your Money Supports

Our goal is to help clients build a life that their money supports.

Money is not the destination, money is just simply a tool. It can create options; it can reduce stress; it can support your family; it can fund generosity; it can certainly create independence. And it can help you spend more time doing the things that matter most.

So when we work with clients, the conversation is not just how do we grow the portfolio; the better question is, what do you want your wealth to make possible? What is the purpose of your wealth?

That is the type of planning relationship that we are trying to build here at Ausperity Private Wealth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I look for in a comprehensive wealth management relationship?

A comprehensive wealth management relationship typically goes beyond investment management alone. Many individuals and families look for guidance that incorporates retirement planning, tax considerations, estate planning, cash-flow management, charitable giving, and major life decisions. The goal is to understand how these areas interact and to create a coordinated strategy that aligns financial decisions with long-term goals and priorities.

Why is tax planning important in wealth management?

Taxes can affect investment returns, retirement income, charitable giving, estate planning, and business decisions. Incorporating tax planning into a broader wealth management strategy may help identify opportunities related to portfolio construction, withdrawal strategies, equity compensation, and other financial decisions. Looking at investments and taxes together often provides a more complete financial picture than focusing on investments alone.

What should I look for when choosing a financial advisor?

When selecting a financial advisor, consider factors such as experience, credentials, investment philosophy, planning services, communication style, and fee structure. Many investors also want an advisor who can coordinate multiple areas of their financial life, including investments, retirement planning, tax considerations, estate planning, and major life transitions. Finding a relationship that aligns with your goals and preferences is often just as important as the services being offered.
